In just about any city you visit, there is a golden rule when it comes to finding good places to eat: Ask the locals. And when it comes to Indian food in Amsterdam, a good many locals will immediately respond with: Koh-I-Noor!
This family-run restaurant first opened its doors in 1981, and it has been an Amsterdam-favorite ever since. It has a dedicated following, making reservations a must. Frequent trips to this restaurant show that many of the diners are long-time repeat customers — most of whom are locals.
Small wonder. The food is excellent, the service friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing.
Guests are welcomed with paper-thin, delicious homemade papardams, authentic Indian music that relaxes and never overwhelms, and a warm, romantic setting.
Full Range of Indian Dishes
Koh-I-Noor’s menu — which can be viewed online — includes a wide range of dishes from different parts of India — each with their own climates, products, spice-mixes and ways of preparation.
As a matter of course for Indian restaurants, there also is a good choice of vegetarian meals and side-dishes.
The food is spicy but not hot. Feel free to let your waiter know whether you prefer mild, medium, or hot. If your taste buds are up to true Indian level, you are welcome to ask for even spicier dishes. You can always cool down with a cool glass of lassi.
Koh-I-Noor’s servings are generous, and come at decent prices.
There is a range of desserts, including the traditional Kheer (Indian ricepudding) and the equally popular Kulfi (Indian icecream).
Koh-I-Noor has two locations.
The original restaurant — and the one we’re most familiar with — is at Westermarkt 29, right across from the famous Westerkerk, the bells of which were heard by Anne Frank. The Anne Frank House is just a stone’s throw from here.
A, younger, second location is at Rokin 18, just south of Dam Square.
