The year-long celebration of Rembrandt’s 400th birthday last year has been good for Amsterdam’s tourism statistics.
Even though the Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovations, the portion of the building that remains open to the public attracted 1.1 million visitors — some 300.000 more than in 2005.
The Van Gogh Museum saw a quarter of a million more visitors, reports Dutch daily Het Parool.
Other attractions profitted as well. This week the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions
announced that the Amsterdam canal tours have become the most popular tourist attraction in the Netherlands. For years, De Efteling — a fairy-tale attraction park, now ranked in second place — was the top destination.
Events organized around the theme of Rembrandt’s 400th birthday drew half a million more visitors to Amsterdam than in other years.
Amsterdam hotels drew 4.6 million guests, six percent more than in 2005. The number of beds booked rose by 8 percent to 8.6 million.
