Amsterdam weather in August

August: Sunniest of the three summer months

On average, August is the sunniest of the three summer months — though there really isn’t much difference in the total hours of sunshine during June, July, and August.

It also is the wettest month of the summer, but here again there’s only a slight difference between July and August.

But when it comes to Amsterdam weather in August, the news can be good or bad.

The Waalseilandgracht, near Amsterdam Central Station. On the far side, the street is called Kromme Waal. On the near side, Binnenkant. Typical Amsterdam August weather, by the way: sun, blue skies, with cumulus clouds

As always in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands, it’s hard to predict what the weather will be like. Long-range forecasts are something of a standing joke — and, come to think of it so are short-range weather forecasts.

That said, in 2009, 2012 and 2013 August was warm dry and sunny — whereas in 2010 and 2011 the month was cool, wet and somber.

Influenced by the aftermath of hurricane Bertha, half a world away, August 2014 was an anomaly: the coldest and wettest in 30 years. Many days of almost fall-like weather drove the summer heat right out of the country.

August 2015 was warm and quite wet, with more rain showers than usual.

What to wear in Amsterdam in August

You won’t need warm clothes, but a light sweat jacket may come in handy when it’s a bit too windy.

On warm days short sleeves and shorts or a skirt will do just fine.

Normally even rainy days are quite mild.

It can also be quite muggy at times.

Amsterdam August tips: mosquitoes, umbrellas

The humidity during the months of July and August turns Amsterdam into an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Pharmacies and some drug stores carry a mosquitoes repellent by the unlikely name of ‘Muggenmelk’ (literally, mosquitoes milk). Those whose blood is favored by the tiny pests swear that Muggenmelk provides the best defense.

You won’t need an umbrella. Should it rain for a bit, just pop into an eatery or a brown café where you can wait out the shower.

If it looks like it’s going to rain for a few hours, make your way to one of Amsterdam’s many museums.
