DutchAmsterdam.nl — CineEurope, Europe’s leading theatrical exhibitor trade fair, is moving from Amsterdam to Barcelona for its 2012 edition.
CineEurope is the official convention of the Union Internationale des Cinémas/International Union of Cinemas (UNIC).
Formerly known as Cinema Expo, the trade fair was held at the RAI Congress Centre in Amsterdam for the past 15 years.
Barcelona had been lobbying for the move for some time.
The convention will now be held at El Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona. The 2012 dates are June 18-21.
“The move to Barcelona represents CineEurope’s dedication to better serving the European cinema exhibition and distribution communities,” stated Robert Sunshine, Managing Director of CineEurope. “CineEurope management and UNIC consulted with constituents and the overwhelming feedback received was that a move to Spain would be a beneficial change.”
“After fifteen years in Amsterdam, we are completely in favor of the move to Barcelona. I am confident the city of Barcelona will welcome CineEurope and its attendees with open arms, and the CCIB will be a perfect new home for the convention,” stated Jose “Pepe” Batlle, Chief Operating Officer, Cinesa.
Larger Cinema
A spokesperson for RAI says, “We understand their motives. CineEurope was looking for a larger cinema, but at RAI there was no room for expansion. In Barcelona they have the use of a hall with 2400 seats, while we could only offer 1100.”
The spokesperson also said that CineEurope was pleased with the RAI, and that just to be sure the event’s organizers have reserved space at the RAI for 2013 and 2014. She said CineEurope is a relatively small trade fair that attracts about 5.000 visitors.
The yearly event attracts big-name movie stars, producers and other film industry professionals.
Amsterdam in Top Ten for congresses and conventions
According to the International Congress and Convention Association Amsterdam ranks among the top ten city destinations for international congresses and conventions. In this year’s report the city ranked in 9th place.
The top five of cities measured by number of meetings organised in 2010 remained unchanged from last year: Vienna, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and Signapore.
