Video: Ice Skating on the Canals of Amsterdam

DutchAmsterdam.com — It’s been more than a decade since the winter weather in Amsterdam was cold enough — for long enough — to allow people to ice skate the city’s famous canals.

Sure, there had been some skating in recent years, but not to this extent.

The amount of ice even grounded Amsterdam’s canal boats. They had already been banned from sailing through certain canals — in order to allow the ice to build up so people could ice skate. But now the boats even got stuck in the ice if they tried to negotiate the remaining canals.

And here is what happens when the canals freeze over like that:

This beautiful video was shot by Jaap van den Biesen and Justin Knaven, using a Canon 7D and Glidecam HD2000.

The song is called ‘To Build A Home’ by Cinematic Orchestra.

We discovered that Knaven is the Managing Director of Provide Media and the Online Production Manager of Wefilm

Incidentally, the video is titled ‘Ice Amsterdam’ — a playful reference to Amsterdam’s marketing slogan, I Amsterdam
