The ‘Italian Method’ in which thieves on scooters break a window of a car stopped at a traffic light and snatch a bag or laptop appears to become a trend.
According to Dutch newspaper Het Parool, Dutch police talks about a worrisome development.
Thiefs like scooters, writes Rob Rombouts. They are increasingly used as getaway vehicles after car break-ins, street robbery, or shoplifting. Scooters also allow thieves to look into cars for things to steal, or to snatch purses from bicycle baskets.
A police spokesman points out that scooters are the fastest method of transportation in Amsterdam. “But the moment we start to hunt scooters, they switch to bikes. If we start going after bikes, they’ll walk.
