In 2007, a project by photographer Spencer Tunick — featuring among other things a host of nude women on bicycles — introduced DREAM AMSTERDAM, an art event that yearly commissions an artist of international renown to create a work of art in Amsterdam.
This year the renowned composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda (Japan, 1966) has been selected to create art projects for DREAM AMSTERDAM.
Art project by Ryoji IkedaIkeda’s hypnotic work plays with human perception through installation, performances, live conceerts, recordings an album releases. His work has been exhibited and presented worldwide, include Tate Modern / Queen Elizabeth Hall (London) and Centre Pompidou / Museum of Modern Art (Paris). He has won important prices, including the Ars Electronica Golden Nica (2001).
Ikeda’s commion for Dream Amsterdam Foundation presents his first large-scale artworks for public spaces and marks a new direction in his artistic career.
For DREAM AMSTERDAM 2008, Ikeda will use pure light as the material for his interventions in four location under the title of spectra :: amsterdam. His intensely bright light installations will appear mysteriously, connecting a constellation of points across the cityscape. The site-specific art projects can be viewed from June 6 until June 21, 2008 in the evening hours.
