DutchAmsterdam.nl — Faced with a diminished demand Amsterdam hotels are currently offering deep discounts. At some hotels you may be able to book a five-star room at half the regular cost.
It is normal for hotels to have a lower occupancy rate during the first two months of the year. This year, however, the industry is faced with a sharp reduction in the number of tourists coming to Holland. This is due both to the strong Euro and the snowball effects of the worldwide financial crisis.
There are, for instance, fewer congresses and meetings — traditionally a good source of customers.
NH Hotels, with 13 hotels market leader in Amsterdam, offers a 50% discount on rooms. The company’s hotels include the prestigious Krasnapolsky at Dam Square, Barbizon, across from Central Station, and Caransa at the Rembrandtplein.
Grand Hotel Amrath, Amsterdam’s newest five star deluxe hotel slices 25% of its regular rates, provided you book at least four nights. A five star room will then set you back a little over €200 per room, per night.
All hotels informed Amsterdam daily Het Parool that the discounts cover only a small percentage of its total inventory, but declined to provide firm numbers.
The Eden Hotel Group, second largest provider of hotels in Amsterdam, told the paper it isn’t playing. “We try to keep our product credible,” says director Léon Dijkstra. “If even during the current months more than 70 percent of our rooms in the city is occupied, we’re not doing that poorly.”
