Amsterdam, Aug. 11, 2009 — Amsterdam’s classical music season for 2009 will kick off with the Grachtenfestival [Canals Festival] that this year takes place from August 15th through August 23rd.
What started 22 years ago as a single piano concert on a barge docked in the Prinsengracht, has developed into a annual festival that takes place in homes and monuments throughout Amsterdam’s historic center and along the banks of the IJ.

This year locations in the Plantage district are included as well: Hermitage Amsterdam, the Jewish Historical Museum, Hortus Botanicus and Artis zoo.
While the Grachtenfestival was, starting in 1998, built around the Prinsengracht Concert, the latter has always remained the highlight of the week-long event.
The concert takes place, as always, on a pontoon in front of Hotel Pulitzer, Prinsengracht 315-331, near the Westermarkt.
Hundreds of small boats filled with music lovers fill the canal from bridge to bridge, while 20.000+ people line the canals and bridges to enjoy the free concert.
The setting and atmosphere are typical of Amsterdam, and if you are in the city you owe it to yourself to be there. — DutchAmsterdam.nl
