Amsterdam tourism sector shows signs of recovery
DutchAmsterdam.nl — The tourism sector in Amsterdam is showing signs of recovery, with the number of nights booked in the city’s hotels on the way up since April.
So says the Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Burea (ACTB), using numbers published by the Netherlands’ Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
During the first three months of this year the financial crisis, in combination with a strong dollar, resulted in a big decline when compared with the same period a year earlier.
April and may saw a small recovery, of 1 and 0.1 percent respectively. June was down a bit (0.3 percent) but in July numbers were up by 10.8 percent.
Other European cities, including London and Paris, did not do so well
More visitor from Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherlands
Amsterdam this year saw an increase in visitors from Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands — primarily, the ACTB says, as a result of promotion campaigns carried out by the city and private businesses.
Yet despite the increase in the number of hotel nights the ACTB expects an overall decline this year of about 5 percent.
Other Statistics Show Decline
Some hotel owners consider the ACTB’s report a little too optimistic.
Referring to statistics from Smith Travel Research (STR) instead of those provided by CBS they point out that the hotel occupancy rate in Amsterdam declined by 10.8 percent during the first ten months of the year. STR’s numbers include the Schiphol Airport region, which was hit hard by the crisis.
The hotel owners also note that the average room rate dropped by 14.8 percent.
Meanwhile the ACTB says it expects the recovery to continue in 2010.
