DutchAmsterdam.nl — Dutch police have smashed a drug smuggling operation after members of the National Crime Squad intercepted nine kilos (20 lb) of cocaine hidden among 20,000 long-stem red roses flown to the Netherlands from Colombia for Valentine’s Day.
The roses arrived last Sunday at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on a flight from Bogota, Columbia. Wrapped in cellophane packets the cocaine was hidden in boxes containing the roses.
Three men were taken into custody, including the person who imported the flowers. Police also confiscated computers and documents, as well as 65.000 Euro ($89.360) in cash.
One of the men was later released. The other two will be arrainged before a judge in Rotterdam later today.
Some of the cocaine was found stashed in a garage belonging to one of the suspects. Police believe it came into the country via an earlier shipment of flowers.
The total street value of the cocaine is 1.3 million Euro ($1.8 million).
