According to Amsterdam public transport firm GVB the two incidents are not related. However, the De Telegraaf writes GVB also said the emtpy metro train was parked at Wibautstraat station because it could not continue its journey to Central Station as a result of the evacuation.
The driver of the second train was unaware the empty train was parked at the station.
The incident is under investigation by Amsterdam police and the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.
It is as yet unclear whether the crash has caused damage to the tracks.
As the station is expected to remain closed throughout at least Sunday, GVB is employing shuttle buses.
