DutchAmsterdam.nl — The disappearance of the giant red letters ‘A’ and ‘M’ from Amsterdam’s IAMSTERDAM marketing logo was a marketing stunt from Sony Computer Entertainment.
The company had the letters removed to promote its new computer game, Heavy Rain, which features the search for a serial killer.
The theme ‘missing’ plays a crucial role in the game, the company says by way of explaining why it removed the letters.
Tourists love the 2 meters (6.5 feet) high and 24 meters (26 yards) long IAMSTERDAM logo.
Located in front of Rijksmusem the sign has become one of the most photographed sights in Amsterdam — with tourists clambering on and in the letters to have their pictures taken.
Responses left by readers of local online news media outlets tend to be negative, with one person suggesting that next time Sony sues someone for illegal downloading the defendants might claim the MP3s were obtained merely as a publicity stunt.
