Hermitage Amsterdam is a dependency of the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg, Russia
The museum is located in the former Amstelhof, a building the size of half a city block which for 324 years was a home for the elderly — said to be the world’s first retirement home.
When at the close of the twentieth century it became apparent that the Amstelhof care facility no longer met contemporary requirements it was decided to find a new use for the building.
Since June 2009 the site has been home to Hermitage Amsterdam. The dependency had already been displaying small exhibitions in a side building next to the Amstelhof since February 2004.
In a relatively short time — between June 2007 and June 2009 — the landmark building at the river Amstel was transformed into a multipurpose museum with exhibition halls, a café-restaurant, shops, a research center, an auditorium and the Hermitage for Children.
The Amstelhof building itself is one of the finest examples of monumental classicist architecture in Amsterdam. It is also the largest 17th century building in town.
Hermitage Amsterdam presents two permanent exhibitions, one about Netherlands-Russia relations and one about the history of the Amstelhof. In addition, temporary exhibitions are presented for six months at a time.
The Hermitage Amsterdam is managed by the Stichting Hermitage aan de Amstel and has an agreement with the Russian government to produce exhibitions together with the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
The Stichting Hermitage aan de Amstel commissions the Stichting Producties De Nieuwe Kerk en Hermitage Amsterdam to organise the exhibitions at the Hermitage Amsterdam. The Hermitage Amsterdam is an independent and autonomous legal entity with its own money flows and its own objectives.
