Amsterdam turns pink for Giromania: the Tour of Italy — If you see an unusual amount of pink in Amsterdam these days you could be forgiven for thinking it’s in honor of one this city’s gay and lesbian events. But you’d be mistaken.

Amsterdam this year is the starting point for the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy). Also simply known as ‘The Giro’ this long distance bicycle race is Italy’s equivalent of the Tour de France.

While the overall leader of the Tour de France is awarded a yellow jersey — originally to correspond with L’Auto ‘s yellow pages — the leader of the general classification in the Giro wears the maglia rosa (pink jersey), in reference to organizing newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport‘s pink newsprint.

On Saturday May 8 at 2pm the Giro d’Italia will commence at Museum square with an individual time trial. [routePDF file]

On Sunday May 9 at 12 noon the second stage involves a 213km ride to Utrecht. [routePDF file]

Then on Monday May 10 at 11am the third stage takes riders from the Gustav Mahlerplein in the Zuidas financial district to the city of Middelburg. [routePDF file]

The event is expected to provide an important economic impulse to the city.

Robert Wichink, spokesperson for the city of Amsterdam, told local news daily Het Parool, “Even the mere fact that Amsterdam will be seen everywhere is of great value. With the Giro we try and demonstrate that Amsterdam is ‘bicycle-minded.”
