DutchAmsterdam.nl — Amsterdam news in brief:
Ash cloud closes Shiphol Amsterdam Airport
Update At 1pm flights to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Rotterdam Airport were resumed.
The ash cloud from Iceland’s smoldering Eyjafjallajokull volcano continues to affect air traffic. While two main airports reopened Monday morning after hours of ash-cloud-related disruption, the air space above Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Rotterdam Airport was closed from 6 o’clock this morning.
Both airports say they hope to resume flights at 2pm. Passengers are told to expect delays, and Schiphol requests that travelers check flight times with their airlines before coming to the airport.
Trash collectors’ strike is over
Tourists intent to taking pictures of huge piles of trash at picturesque locations will again have to travel to Napels, Italy now that refuge collectors and street cleaners in the Netherlands are no longer on strike.
The workers were on strike because they have worked for over a year without a collective agreement (CAO).
Last Friday their demands were met in an agreement that also covers all other civil servants in the Netherlands.
Clean-up activities began on Sunday morning. During the previous night morons lit several of the garbage heaps throughout Amsterdam.
In some neighborhoods trash collectors were cheered by grateful citizens. Most people supported the strikers.
Lady Gaga goes Casa Rosso
On Saturday evening Lady Gaga gave a concert in Arnhem’s Gelredome. After the show the singer and her entourage traveled to Amsterdam where she toured the Red Light District, including the world famous Casa Rosso.
Sunday afternoon coffeeshop De Dampkring, of Oceans 12 fame, also was honored with a visit by Lady Gaga.
Local newspaper De Telegraaf reports the extravagant pop idol hardly stood out amongst the Red Light district regulars.
DNA research in old murder case
The Justice Department has asked 158 Amsterdammers to provide DNA as part of a last-ditch effort to solve the murders of Henk Opentij en Mary Run, an elderly couple killed in 1997 in Amsterdam-North.
The research is performed jointly by the Dutch National Prosecution Service and the Netherlands Forensic Institute.
The 158 men were selected from a total of 600 people whose names appear in the investigation file. Their identities will remain secret, unless a DNA match is found.
Partial reopening for Amsterdam modern art museum
The Stedelijk Museum (literally, Municipal Museum) which houses a large portion of Amsterdam’s modern art collection, is being renovated and expanded. The museum, which aims to be one of the most innovative museums of modern art in the world, has been closed since 2003.
Initially the museum was expected to open in 2008, but now renovation activities won’t be finished until the middle of 2011.
Until October 2008 a temporary location was found in the former postal building next to Central Station.
Currently the museum, which owns one of the world’s richest modern art collections, organizes exhibitions and other activities throughout Amsterdam — including in the new wing of the Van Gogh Museum.
On August 28 the museum opens ‘The Temporary Stedelijk,’ — a mixture of art exhibits, events and educational programs to take place in the renovated portion of the 1895 building.
