DutchAmsterdam.nl — In the 2010 version of its annual listing of the World’s Best Cities to live in, Mercer Consulting has again ranked Amsterdam at number 13 — a spot it has occupied since 2006.
That means Amsterdam is among the “most livable” cities in the world.
Amsterdam has ranked higher in the past, but an ongoing program of traffic-disrupting city-wide construction projects — including the ill-advised and problem-laden North-South metro project — has contributed to the recent dip.
In 2005 Amsterdam occupied 12th place, and in 2003 and 2004, the city was listed in 10th place.
A spokesperson for Amsterdam alderman Carolien Gehrels (Culture) told Dutch news agency ANP that the city is satisfied with the thirteenth spot on the rankings. ”Of course you want is actually the first place position, but this shows that Amsterdam is a nice place to live.”
Mercer conducts the annual Quality of Living Survey to help governments and multi-national companies compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments.
In a change from previous years, the survey now ranks 221 versus 215 cities. The company evaluates local living conditions in 420 cities worldwide. Living conditions are analysed according to 39 factors, grouped in 10 categories, including political stability, crime, censorship, limitations on personal freedom, health and sanitation conditions, education, public services, recreation, housing, and natural environment.
The rankings are based on a point-scoring index, which sees Vienna (#1 on the list) — score 108.6 and Baghdad (#221) 14.7. Cities are ranked against New York (#49) as the base city, with an index score of 100.
Mercer’s analysis is part of a worldwide quality of life survey, covering 215 cities, to help governments and major companies to place employees on international assignments.
European cities continue to dominate amongst the top 25 cities in the index — with only five cities in that list located on other continents.
