Amsterdam wants the belt of canals around its 17th-century old center to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the municipality said on Wednesday.
“It would be an important recognition of the exceptional and universal value of this 17th-century part of the city,” Tjeerd Herrema, the Amsterdam alderman for monuments and archaeology, said in a statement.
Amsterdam’s ‘belt’ of canals around the city’s centerHe said the inclusion of the Grachtengordel, a unique system of marshland islands interlinked by canals and bridges, on the UNESCO list would boost tourism.
The Grachtengordel is an area covered with 17th century warehouses that doubled as living quarters.
The houses were built in identical rectangular plots around a large inner garden that is not visible from the street.
The old center of Amsterdam, with its picturesque bridges and elegant facades, is a favorite with tourists in the Dutch capital.
Before UNESCO can consider Amsterdam’s application, the Dutch government has to approve the nomination before September 2007.
