DutchAmsterdam.nl — Enjoying a round of drinks at an Amsterdam café terrace will cost you more money than anywhere else in the Netherlands, a survey conducted by horeca consultancy agency Van Sponsen & Partners shows.
The tab for 2 small beers, 2 cups of coffee, 2 glasses of rosé and 2 soft drinks comes to €21.15, this year’s edition of the annual survey says, noting that represents a 2.9% increase over last year.
This makes Amsterdam terraces the most expensive in the the country for the seventh year in a row, followed by The Hague (€20.13) and Rotterdam (€19.68).
Nijmegen — the oldest city in the Netherlands — is the least expensive town on the list, with an average tab of €17.48 — nearly 18% cheaper than the same round of drinks in Amsterdam.
The price differences can be explained in part by differences in rental rates and in the cost of permits for outdoor seating.
Fluitje
The serving of beer ordered in the survey is known as a ‘fluitje‘ (literally, small whistle). A fluitje is a slender, slightly curved beer glass with a volume of 22cl.
Note that if you merely order a beer without specifying a size, many Amsterdam café will serve you a pint — at 47.32cl both larger and pricier.
