On Sunday 15 October 2006, Amsterdam offers the 31st ING Amsterdam Marathon, a sports event with international allure, with probably over 20,000 athletes from more than fifty countries.
The track will lead the athletes from the Olympic Stadium through the city centre and along the Amstel. The event will start at 10.30 a.m. and will last until 5 p.m.
In 2005, the level and fast track provided wonderful results. The highlight was the breaking of the men’s track record of 2.06.20 by the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie. With this, Amsterdam strengthened its fourth place in the world rankings of fastest marathon cities.
The ING Amsterdam Marathon did not only set a track record, but also a record number of participants of 19,900.
The unique character of Amsterdam and the fast track draw many prominent athletes to Amsterdam, as well as many international runners who will combine the marathon with a stay Amsterdam.
Olympic Stadium
The start and finish point is also a point of interest: the Olympic Stadium, the location where the Olympic Games of 1928 were held. Nearby, in Sport Complex Zuid, is a special Marathon Market with a large selection of sports goods.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has classified the ING Amsterdam Marathon in the Golden League category, along with eleven other leading marathons: Chicago, London, Berlin, Rotterdam, New York, Paris, Milan, Boston and the Japanese marathons of Tokyo, Otsu and Fukuoka. The women’s marathon is also in the list of 12 marathons with a Golden League status.
