It may be a matter of time before Amsterdam begins to charge bicycle riders to park their bikes in certain areas of town.

Alderman Maurice Piek (VVD) yesterday suggested that the city build bicycle parking facilities in places like Munt square, Dam square and at Central Station.

Daily parking rates for unreserved spots in Amsterdam are the highest in the world, while the city's monthly parking fee for unreserved spots place it third, just after London City and London West End.

A spokesman for the city of Amsterdam says the fees are high in order to keep the city clean.
