Amsterdam loves bicycles

DutchAmsterdam.com — You’ve heard us (and others) say it before: Amsterdam is the bicycle capital of the world.

The city was made for bicycling. Well, actually, the 700+ year-old city’s narrow streets were made for pedestrians, horse-draw carts, push carts and boats, but bicycling is actively encouraged in Amsterdam — as indeed through the Netherlands — with such features as dedicated bike lanes and traffic lights.

The goverment actively promotes cycling, and pays much attention to safety, as well as improvement and expansions of the nationwide network of bike lanes.

Incidentally, did you know that one in three Amsterdammers rides a bicycle to work?

Don’t have a bike? Rent a bicycle, or take a bicycle tour.
