Amsterdam is World Book Capital 2008

Amsterdam – As of today, Amsterdam can call itself World Book Capital 2008.

Princess Laurentien, the wife of Queen Beatrix’s youngest son Constantijn, officially opened the theme year. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Job Cohen and Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk.

In the coming year, Amsterdam will host a wide scala of exhibitions, lectures and presentations about books. The world’s largest book fair will be held next month, and a special event for young bibliophiles will be organised in September.

In collaboration with Unesco, the organisers also want to stimulate semi-literate people to start reading, and a campaign has been launched to increase the number of books for the blind and the partially sighted.
