Murderer of Amsterdam daycare center owner gets 22-year prison sentence

DutchAmsterdam.nl — The Amsterdam court today handed down a 22-year prison term to the murderer of Turkish daycare center owner Arzu Çakmakçi-Erbas.

Based on the testimony of witnesses, the court found Nezvat K., an immigrant from Turkey, guilty of murdering Erbas on August 11, 2009.

The motive behind the murder remains a mystery as the defendant used his right to remain silent during the trial.

Possible motives are said to include a so-called ‘honor killing.’ Investigators learned that Erbas had a three-year long extramarital affair with K.’s nephew — a business partner with whom she ran a construction company. Such a relationship would not be allowed in Turkey.

Another possible motive is that the nephew, whose construction company at times employed K., owed him money.

In the past Nevzat K. has been convicted for murder and grievous bodily harm in his native Turkey.

K.’s prison sentence is slightly shorter than the 25-year term demanded by the Public Prosecutor.
